KIPDA Approves Greenways Grant

April 26, 2007 The Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA) Transportation Policy Committee approved a $284,000 grant request submitted by the Oldham County Planning and Zoning Department for the Commerce Parkway segment of the county greenways initiative .   The grant is for transportation enhancement funding for a 3.2 mile shared-use Oldham County Bike and Pedestrian Trial along Commerce Parkway in LaGrange.

The plans are to connect this trail to the initial section of the Interurban Greenway which exists in LaGrange, and further, to extend the Oldham County Bike and Pedestrian Trail to Crestwood and Pewee Valley.

The board expresses its gratitude to all of the individuals, local officials, and non-profit organizations who took the time to write letters of support for the grant application.  The board also appreciates the work of Oldham County Planning and Zoning planning technician, Tifinie Adams, for spearheading the grant application process and for Oldham County Fiscal Court for supporting the effort.

 21st Century Parks Website

21st Century Parks has unveiled its Web site, www.21cparks.org, which is designed to offer the public detailed information about the proposed Fork public park system.

The Fork, which would encompass more than 3,000 acres of land and more than 20 miles of continuous trails along Floyd's Fork Creek, would be bordered on the north by Shelbyville Road and on the south by Bardstown Road.

"In our guiding principles, we aspire to design a world-class park system that is well-used and well-loved," Dan Jones, 21st Century chairman and CEO, said in a news release.

The Web site has a "Get Involved" page as a virtual suggestion box for the park's design. The draft master plan of The Fork will be unveiled at a March 4 public meeting at Christian Academy of Louisville, 700 S. English Station Road.

Remarks by Mayor Jerry Abramson

Oldham County Chamber of Commerce 2007 Showcase Kickoff

Let me mention just one more initiative high on my mind … that brings us together…related to preserving green space.

Both our communities are confronting the challenges of healthy growth. . . looking at ways to plan more effectively … to maintain their unique character …and balance development.

...Three or 4 large new parks will be developed…as well as a 27-mile greenway, featuring a bike and pedestrian trail …that will eventually link to a 100-mile loop around Louisville…with an additional loop that crosses the Ohio River and goes through Southern Indiana. Our goal is to connect your greenways with this project. . . as well.

Greenways for Oldham County members say they are interested in the Metro Loop project, since the loop will extend beyond the city of Louisville. The Metro Loop project is one that Greenways “could definitely connect with anywhere,” said Amy Jackson, a Greenways board member. A possible connection would be in Pewee Valley, she added.
She says she is excited about a project that could bring tourism dollars to Oldham County, in addition to helping with fitness levels. Cyclists generally travel far when riding, and this would be a way to encourage Jefferson County residents to visit Oldham County for the day.
“A lot of cyclists already ride along Westport Road,” said Jackson.
Jackson has observed that in other towns that have pedestrian-bicycle paths, new restaurants and businesses pop up along the trails. People are already making a connection from Jefferson County to Oldham County, said Jackson.
